Second grade classes travel around the world! As a final research unit with the LMC and as part of their social studies culture comparison, students in second grade chose one country to learn about. First we generated a list of facts that students should learn about a country such as where it is located (continent), major landforms, the meaning of its flag and the language spoken. Then student identified interests like holidays, sports, a kids' life, attractions, and animals of the country to learn about. Each student was responsible for learning the basic facts and choosing two extra interests. Students used Worldbook.com and Facts4Me for basic information and Culturegrams, a database, as well as books and other websites for this information, taking notes and keeping track of resources used. Next, students chose how they wanted to share their information - in an iMovie, Google Presentation, or with the iPad apps Pic Collage or My Story. The final piece of the presentation is a bibliography of the information sources the student's used.
