Second grade classes participated in a research project with the LMC in which they first studied the Presidents who are carved on the Mount Rushmore monument to learn why Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt were chosen. Students used what they learned to generate a list of qualities that they believed make a great leader - helped people, inspired or set a good example, improved the country and was fair. Next they tested those qualities as they each read about either President Eisenhower, President Franklin Roosevelt, President Kennedy, President Johnson or President Carter and shared their understanding with the class. Together the class wrote to a Mount Rushmore National Park ranger with their conclusions and he wrote a detailed response very excited about their research! Finally they created a "motivational poster" for the President they believe should be added to Mount Rushmore including three pieces of evidence from their research. Here are a few of their posters:
