As a final research unit with the LMC and as part of their social studies culture comparison, students in second grade chose one country to learn about. First we generated a list of facts that students should learn about a country such as where it is located (continent), major landforms, the meaning of its flag and the language spoken. Then students identified questions they had about a country such as what holidays do they celebrate, sports they like, what is a kids' life, what are some special attractions, and what animals are unique to the country. Each student was responsible for learning the basic facts and then choosing two extra interests. Students used Worldbook.com and Facts4Me for basic information and Culturegrams, a database, as well as books and other websites for the rest of their information. They took notes, practicing how to read carefully, think about what they learned and record facts in their own words, and also to keep track of resources used. Next, students chose how they wanted to share their information - in an iMovie, Google Presentation, or with the iPad apps Pic Collage or My Story. The final piece of the presentation is a bibliography of the information sources the student's used.
