As students learned about the water cycle and the distribution of Earth’s water in 5th grade science, they became aware that although water seems to be abundant here in Arlington Heights, access to fresh clean water is not a fact in all parts of the World and there are many problems, debates and questions regarding collecting and conserving it as a necessary resource for all. In LMC we challenged students to choose a water issues to research and create a presentation to share their understanding with the class. The issues students delved into included some newer technology such as desalination and hydroponics, as well as pervasive problems with diseases in water, the debate about tap versus bottled water, the problems with trash in the Oceans, and oil spills. They were given their choice as to the tool with which to share information and chose Prezi, Google Presentations, iMovie and Comic Life. Below is one example. See their work on the 5th Grade Student Projects Pages. Bottled Water versus Tap Water? Ask a 5th grader which is better!
