To culminate their unit on Native Americans and The Environment, we provided 4th grade students with a set of primary source photographs of American Indians in the six regions across the United States that they have studied. The photographs taken between 1890 - 1910, depict tribes in many ways, such as, in ceremonial dress, harvesting crops, fishing, weaving and taking care of children. Students had time to observe the land, plants, animals, shelter and clothing shown in the photograph in order to determine what region the tribe lived in. Then we "revealed" the bibliographic information for each photograph, and discovered the students had observed carefully and applied their knowledge to these authentic sources.
