5th grade students learned the "engineering design process" using the problems in a picture book. The process includes: first, What's the problem? Next, Imagine, what are some ways to solve the problem? Then, Plan how to do it, and finally, Make a model to test the idea, and after testing, consider how to change the design to make it better. To highlight this process, now part of our Science Standards, we used a picture book A Snowy Day by Keats, to demonstrate each step. Then we introduced a selection of other picture books and students worked in groups, choosing and reading one book, and identifying a problem, brainstorming a solution and using a variety of materials, they designing a model of an inventive solution to their identified problem. Enjoy their creativity!
