As first grade classes studied the U.S. symbols in the classroom, in LMC, we used the Presidential portraits of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln to practice observation, reflection and questioning and discuss what we could learn about the President from his portrait. As a class, student's observed how the President was dressed, his expression and stance and the objects he included with him in the portrait. For example, Washington is holding a sword, while Jefferson included a scientific instrument in his portrait. We asked the students to think about what these objects could tell us about the President. Each student chose one President to reflect on using the app Explain Everything and each student also created their own "portrait" in Pic Collage including three objects that had meaning for them.
