Here's the challenge the 3rd grader's have accepted:
Third graders have had a mysterious month! First we discussed the elements of the mystery genre, and read and solved short mystery stories in groups. Next each student chose and read a mystery novel and created a book jacket for their book. As the "publisher" the students illustrated their own cover for the book jacket, created a title page with title, author, publisher and copyright date, and finally wrote a mystery synopsis to hook the reader! Here are two examples:
First graders have been studying different types of homes around the World and why they are built the way they are. They researched huts, stilt houses, adobe houses, yurts and houseboats taking notes on what they are made of, the environment around the house, and the location and weather where it is built. Students used Adobe Voice, an app on the iPads to share their knowledge. Enjoy Mrs. Buch's class presentations:
My Reading List!
I am the Library Media Center director at Patton School in Arlington Heights where I help students from kindergarten through 5th grade find terrific independent reading for enjoyment and information, and teach students the skills to use information and technology safely and productively and to connect, communicate and share with others. I have four grown children, a large black dog, (flat coat retriever) and a small striped cat. I am an obessive Chicago Cubs fan and I love to run.
