With Kindergarten classes, we read Nana in the City, by Lauren Castillo, about a boy who fears the busy loud city where his Nana has moved until his Nana gives him a red cape to make him brave. Now the city is not so scary, in fact, in a brave cape, the city is wonderful! We tried it! Here are the brave things our students can do wearing their brave red cape!

Our One Book, One School event with The Wild Robot is over, (until next year!) leaving us all with great memories of adventure, wonderful characters, unique robots, and special time spent reading with our families. Here is a reminder of the school activities and learning, student reactions and thanks!
Enjoy a look at the class robots and hear the students explain how the robot represents their class and its purpose! (in alphabetical order by teacher)
And remember to check out my last post for more photos.
While families read The Wild Robot at home, in school classes discuss, debate, predict and create with the story. Each class also worked on their Class Robot: first asking what kind of robot would best represent our class? As a result classes are creating robots that: help us follow the Patton Way, help us learn, help the school stay organized and read to us, just to name a few of the many purposes the Patton class robots will have. Classes also extended their understanding of the book with mini design challenges that solve problems that animals on the island have using only 3 materials. Some classes have designed a product that would help Roz navigate the land on the island or its weather. Here are photos of family reading, students working on their class robot in school and other extension activities: Reading at home with familyBuilding Robots, Coding with Roz, and Designing Products to Help Roz
