At 3:00 pm, everyone was instructed to Drop Everything and Read! Students had three minutes to grab a book and find a place anywhere in the school to read for 30 minutes! Look at the great reading all over Patton...

First grade students read books on animals in pairs searching for that special unique feature that helps that animal survive, find food, or protect itself from predators. After choosing their favorite fact, they used the iPad app "Chatterpix" to tell their fact from the animal's perspective! And here's the result: The contest is on! Which grade will read the most nonfiction this month as evidenced by the number of facts they submit to the LMC. The rules are simple, read a great book for information, choose an awesome, interesting, surprising or amazing true fact and write it (or draw it) on the fact form in your classroom, the LMC, or at home. Add the title of the book and your name and bring it to the LMC! The facts are already being posted, by grade, and 2nd grade took an early lead! On the morning of November 3, Patton students were treated to a special event, a presentation by author Barb Rosenstock. She spoke to kindergarten, first and second grade classes describing in interactive detail how she brings the people she writes about to life on the pages of her books, as she read one of her special nonfiction stories, The Noisy Paintbox. Students in third, fourth and fifth grade learned about the research that went into writing The Camping Trip that Saved America, including all about the Sequoia trees that John Muir wanted to save and also her top 3 tips for being a better writer! Thank you to the Patton PTA and District 25! Eight lucky students continued the fun at a lunch with the author in the LMC after the presentations. Take a look:
Second graders have been learning about how sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks are formed. As "rock detectives" they read and listened to Facts4Me and PebbleGo. Next they chose a rock, found its photo, and told their rock story in Chatterpix. Here are Mrs. Sobanski's students "rocks": |
