Tom Watson, author and illustrator of the very funny and engaging Stick Dog series and soon the Stick Cat series, visited Patton on Friday, April 21. He talked to 2nd, 3rd and some 4th grade classes about how and why he created the Stick Dog series and developed each of the characters. He also gave our students an advanced look at his new book Stick Cat which won't be in the stores for a few weeks! Then he taught the students how to draw each character, one step at a time. With clipboards, paper and pencils, students followed every move and were rewarded with Stick Dog, Stripes, Mutt, Poo Poo, Karen and Stick Cats to take home. Mr. Watson signed his drawings for Patton and we auctioned them off to benefit Patton's Walkathon for Make-a-Wish at the Patton Art Show. It was a memorable afternoon, take a look:

We celebrated on the National Poem in Your Pocket day by sharing poems from our pockets, all day long. Some students folded their poems in paper origami pockets made this week in preparation, but everyone had a poem they had chosen or written for the day. Every hour a different staff member read a poem on the loudspeaker and called for a few minutes of poem sharing. Poet and author Heidi Roemer presented to K-2 and described a mask poem and Arlington Heights Mayor Hayes skyped with 5th grade classes and read Casey at the Bat. At lunch we held an open mike and many students shared their poems. Take a look and enjoy:
March Madness Booktology is over! We began with 16 great books before Spring Break, and after four rounds of voting today Patton students crowned a Grade 3-5 Book, K-3 Book and Series Book Champion!
Second grade students chose a favorite chapter book to recommend to others and using Adobe Voice app shared the main character, setting, problem and why they liked the book! Enjoy Mrs. Miklautsch's class below and other classes on the second grade project page.
As part of their science curriculum on Biomes of the World, we challenged each student to "design an animal that has the adaptations and characteristics necessary to survive in their biome." First they researched a biome (Desert, Taiga, Rainforest, Deciduous Forest, Marine, Coral Reef, Chaparral, Savanna or Grassland) to become an expert on its location, climate, the plants and animals that live there and the adaptations those animals have in order to survive there. Then each student designed an animal, drew their animal in Pixie, inserted a photo of their drawing onto a photo of the biome and in Explain Everything, an iPad app, "explained" their animal's survival features and how its characteristics would help it to adapt and thrive! Mrs. Costa's class is below and you can find the other classes on the 3rd Grade Student Projects page. View, learn, and see if you agree!
In connection with the first grade classes study of National symbols and President's Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln in LMC, we examined photographs of President Washington and Jefferson's official portraits obtained from the Library of Congress. We used the "I See, I think, I Wonder" method in which student's first observed, with their keen eyes, that each President chose to include specific items in their portrait, and we brainstormed why they think the President included those items, based on what they had learned about that President, and finally students asked questions about what they observed. Next each student chose one Presidential portrait to reflect on using the Explain Everything app on the iPad and each student created their own "portrait" using the Pic Kids app, choosing a few items that are important to them to include in their portrait. Enjoy Mrs. Copersmet's class reflections and view the other classes on the First Grade Student Project Page
